Caffeine is, by a wide margin, the most widely consumed psychoactive substance in the world, and much of that use is specifically for its cognitive effects — but what it's actually doing mechanistically is often misunderstood.
How caffeine actually works
Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors in the brain. Adenosine is a compound that gradually builds up during waking hours and promotes the feeling of sleepiness. Caffeine doesn't add energy — it blocks the signal telling you that you're tired.
What it reliably improves
Caffeine has a well-established, fairly reliable effect on alertness, reaction time, and sustained attention, particularly when someone is somewhat sleep-deprived to begin with.
What it doesn't do
Caffeine doesn't meaningfully improve complex reasoning, memory formation, or creative problem-solving beyond restoring baseline alertness — and its benefit is smaller in people who are already well-rested.
The "borrowed energy" framing
Because caffeine masks rather than reduces adenosine buildup, that sleep pressure is still accumulating underneath. Once caffeine wears off, that accumulated tiredness reasserts itself — part of why afternoon crashes are common.
A practical note
Caffeine consumed within roughly six hours of bedtime can measurably reduce sleep quality even in people who feel they fall asleep fine — undermining the very sleep needed for genuine, non-caffeine-dependent alertness the next day.
