Multitasking is widely treated as a valuable skill, but brain research paints a different picture: what feels like doing two cognitively demanding tasks simultaneously is, in almost every case, the brain rapidly switching attention back and forth.
What's actually happening
Except for tasks that have become largely automatic (like walking while talking), genuinely cognitive tasks — writing an email while following a conversation, for example — cannot run in true parallel in the brain's attention systems. Instead, attention toggles rapidly between them.
The measurable cost
Each switch carries a small time cost as the brain reorients to the new task, along with reduced accuracy on both tasks compared to doing them sequentially. Frequent switching is also linked to increased subjective mental fatigue by the end of the day.
Why it feels productive anyway
Task-switching produces a sense of busyness and engagement that can feel more satisfying in the moment than focused, sequential work — even though total output and quality tend to be lower.

- Turning off non-urgent notifications during focused work blocks
- Accepting that switching, not simultaneous processing, is what's actually happening — and planning around that reality
