For much of the twentieth century, the prevailing scientific view was that the adult brain was essentially fixed after childhood — the connections you had were the connections you'd keep. Research since the 1970s has overturned that view substantially.

When you practice a new skill repeatedly, the specific neural pathways involved are strengthened through a process where connections used together become more efficient. Pathways that go unused, meanwhile, tend to weaken over time — often summarized as "use it or lose it."

- Physical exercise, which increases levels of proteins that support new neural connections
- Quality sleep, during which the brain consolidates and strengthens the connections formed during the day
Why this matters practically
Neuroplasticity is part of why recovery from brain injury is possible, why learning new skills remains achievable at any age, and why cognitively engaging habits appear protective against decline. The brain is not a fixed structure — it's an ongoing, adaptable process.
